Triangle3D : Small Flash 10 3D demo.

Over the last days I've spent some time twittering back and forth with Eugene. His supershape demo is very cool and we spent some time 'tweeting' about shaders. This lead me to upload and twitter one of my experiments which I used as part of my FOTB / MAX presentation. Judging by the huge number of retweets it seems people enjoyed it a lot, so I figured that it was worth a blog post. I started working on this experiment a while back after toying around with OpenGL, OpenFrameworks and audio reactive shapes and that inspired me to do something similar in Flash. This is an unfinished demo as it lead me to pursue something else, at which point I stopped working on it.

In the session where this came from, specifically this part, I shared information about the path of yet another demo, where this experiment led me too. Some of you who attended Flash on the Beach, might recall it from the Adobe keynote, where it was aptly named "milky ball". I'll present on it one more time on the 3rd of December at the AUG XL event, in Amsterdam. I'll post more of the session's demos with explanation, when I have the time.

I do want to clarify that the code base I've created for this, which I currently call Triangle3D, is not to be a new Papervision3D, Away3D, Alternativa3D, Infinity3D, Sandy3D, Null3D or Yogurt3D (I'm probably missing a couple, sorry, have your way in the comments). It's my experimental playground of classes to play around, with no care for architecture restrictions or a generalized API. It's all about me playing and enjoying. Pure experimentation of what can be achieved with Flash 3D and hoping to find something beautiful in it.

Ambassador for the Adobe User Group Netherlands.

The Dutch Adobe User Group is the fastest growing dutch community for creative professionals and I'm proud to announce I'm now officially an ambassador for the Adobe User Group.

For those who know me a bit already, you'd know I used to be in the board for the User Group, and was amongst the original founders, after the Macromedia UG was rebooted as the Adobe User Group back in 2007. In all honesty, I wasn’t able to be active beyond that point. A schedule of work, conferences and workshops has put me into a great place in my life, but I wasn't contributing to this amazing community initiative, nor working as hard as my fellow board members. These guys have lifted an huge amount of work and enthousiasm to create an amazing User Group. The work they did has put this User Group at the top of the world wide lists of user groups.

Really ? Let's talk some numbers. These days, the Dutch Adobe User Group has grown into a group of 1700 people, every themed meeting sees an average of 200 visitors. Simply amazing. This is an event anyone can join into, see great sessions, meet new people and have a general great time. All of that, for free. Make sure you subscribe as a member. The presentations given at any meeting are of an amazing quality; amongst the big names are AKQA, Wieden + Kennedy and dutch agency Achtung, who have been taking the visitor behind the scenes of their productions.

A personal highlight for me over the last year was the arrival of the "German meeting", where Powerflasher/FDT, Mario Klingemann and Andre Michelle came to show off their magic. You'll note that all the videos for this session are AVAILABLE ONLINE ! Next to sessions, there are Awards where people can send in their work, discounts for creative magazines and sponsored networking drinks afterwards. The Dutch AUG is a great platform to raise your knowledge, inspiration and network. And again, all of this is free! How's that possible ? Thanks to a wide range of corporate sponsors formed by leading industry companies.

Now, back to my role in all of this. My personal opinion was that they should've kicked me out of the management a long, long, long time ago. Instead of that, I feel honored they asked me to become their ambassador. In this role I'll try and spread the word about this user group, and hope I can be a utility to extend the success.

I just returned from teaching the Papervision3D workshop in Sweden; it was an awesome group and good fun! For all those who attended : Thank you very much for the good and fun workshop, you where an awesome group! Also many thanks for Johan and Marcus from the local usergroup for helping out with the event!

This week Saturday I'll be heading off to Chicago to be part of the FITC Chicago event. I'm looking forward to doing my Flash 2D & 3D effects session as well as a 1 day workshop on Papervision3D. If you haven't registered yet, make sure you do so as there are still some tickets left, but they are going fast!

With such an awesome line up, I'm sure this will surely be a success and a opportunity for us to reach out to the korean / asian community! Looking forward to see any of you there!

On the 20th of December I will be attending and speaking at the DFUG (Danish User Group) in Ã…rhus, Denmark. I'm looking forward to meeting people in the Danish Flash / Flex industry! MXUG : Meeting @ Spark speakers expansion : Aral Balkan

MXUG : Meeting @ Spark

I've got a great announcement from MXUG (the dutch User Group) : There will be a MXUG meeting @ Spark in "De Balie" on Wednesday the 16th of November, 19:00. The topic will be OSFlash (which I my opinion is one of the most happening things at the moment). Spark Europe has kindly donated the space, and some of the speakers at the Spark Conference will also speak at the MXUG meeting;

Surprise presentation at dutch MM usergroup (MXUG). + (promised ppt and links)

Tonight was the MXUG (the dutch MM usergroup) night. One of the planned presenters couldn't come, we heared of this kind of last minute (the reason why was also last minute, so this isn't a stab at anyone, just to be clear). Since not that long I am a member of the management for MXUG, so we quickly went brainstorming with the team on how to fill the time and keep it usefull for the visitors. It was decided that Martijn de Visser, Owen van Dijk and me would try and fill the gap by doing a session on FP8.5 / Zorn / Flex 2 / AS3, or any of this topics we could prepare enough for in an hour's worth of time (can you actually?).

The well organised & planned presentations went very smooth indeed...
Mark de Jong (sorry about the name confusion, the adrenaline made me fumble) of Netmasters did a enlightning session on MediaServer, and the guys of "Park to Play" showed how to turn in to turn a normal car in a giant joystick (4 people slamming with the car's doors to play one shared game of Tetris? Insane, but funny!) They did all the menu interfaces in Flash..

Owen got in to some major troubles with his install of the alpha, and an unstable laptop, so he decided to pass on this one, which took out the part about E4X he had prepared. It ended up in Martijn and me doing both a separeted "mash up" session on FP8.5, and Zorn/AS3. Martijn took the crowd deep into the new player / AVM2 and AS3 (and showed some pretty pictures of anaheim along the way ), and I had the easier job off showing how cool Zorn and AS3 are. I think we did about 2% of what we had seen on MAX, and some personal experience, but there's just too much to tell on these subjects (guessing we filled up about 45 minutes). It ended up in both doing a much longer session then we expected, but the audience was very cool and understanding, and I think it went well, under those circumstances.

Really like to thank Franto for letting me show his conversion of Andre Michelle's pathfinding demo.

If you've been there last night, let me know what you thought, just keep in mind what Martijn and me did was totally improvised. Here's the powerpoint I used (1 slide and in Dutch, so don't bother, hehe), and here are the links I mentioned.
