Tiny update and an example of FP8.5 performance.
So I haven’t been able to actually post some updates on MAX 2005 today. Hoping to get to this tomorrow. Gary Grossman’s sessions about both Next Generation ActionScript&Next Generation Flash Player are some of the best technical sessions I’ve ever been attending. Furthermore I learned it’s possible to create an ActionScript 3 project from the FlexBuilder 2. So I’ve been playing around, and with the great help of the Zorn team, got a demo up and running.
It’s the fluid demo you’ve seen here before, which I converted from the processing examples to benchmark the 8 player; this time it’s on steroids. The original was already choppy at 500 particles. This version is running at 5000 particles, and there’s not even the slightest glitch or framedrop on my machine. Simply amazing. I’ll post more details tomorrow, for now I really, really need to sleep.
[update] The object tag was wrong. Fixed.
Fluid Demo original (you’ll need the 8 player)
Fluid Demo 8.5 (you’ll need the 8.5 player)

Looks great, Ralph! This is a great performnace demo. It has only been a day since we shipped the alpha of Player 8.5. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do given more time.

I had a problem with looking at the html page in IE. I have FP 8.5 installed (tracing $version shows 8.5) but I think IE is looking for the object tag wich still says it uses fp8 and refers to ‘ding.swf’. Only the embed tag points to the right location. In IE you should open the swf directly and not through the html page.
Very cool demo, this really shows one of flashplayers major pittfalls is being addressed and solved.

The Flash player’s performans is fantastic! We can see it has a dramatic speed increase in demo with Player 8.5.
Thanks for the demo.
